Tips for Caregivers to Reduce Stress

Being a caregiver to someone can take a lot of energy. If you are the main caregiver of a loved one, it might take up a lot of your time and energy. You can be considered a caregiver whether your loved one is living with your or in a senior living community with you as the emergency contact.

Here are a few tips for caregivers to keep their stress levels low.

Make time for yourself. Whether you have a certain hobby you enjoy doing or you want to get away for a little bit, make sure to spend some time doing something you specifically want to do. Make time for your own hobbies and interests.

Take care of yourself physically. This means eating well and staying physically active. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress and to lift the mood, so even if you don’t feel like getting any exercise, it can still be a huge benefit. You’ll feel a lot better afterward.

Get enough rest. You can’t be very productive if you’re not sleeping well or resting enough. Make sure to keep this in mind and to spend enough time taking care of yourself. If it gets to the end of the day and there are still things to get done, leave it for the next day. Make a schedule for yourself, and make sure you include time for you to rest.

Talk to someone. It can help you to put some of your trust in someone else. It can help you to know that you’re not alone. If you join a support group or go to a counselor, you can receive some very constructive feedback and guidance.

Ask others for help. If you’re getting overwhelmed with how much you need to do, it’s okay to ask others for help. This might mean asking siblings or other loved ones to help you out for a few hours here and there. If your loved one lives in assisted living (or another form of senior living) you probably won’t need to spend as much time with your loved one. However, you might need financial help or you might need help getting your loved one settled into their new home.
