Surviving War and Immigration: One Resident’s Journey to Tyler, TX

The Hamptons of Tyler is home to residents with diverse life experiences, but few have a story quite like Jirina “Ina” D. From escaping Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia to building a new life in North America, her journey is one of resilience, adaptability, and determination. Now, she has found a new home in The Hamptons of Tyler, where she continues to share her experiences and connect with those around her.

Ina was born in occupied Czechoslovakia during World War II. Her family, once successful furniture business owners, lost everything under Nazi control and, later, the communist regime. Despite restrictions that prevented her from pursuing her dream of becoming a doctor, she earned a degree and taught sports and language studies in a Czech high school outside Prague.

Ina married a downhill racer on the Czech national team, and had her first son before her 21st birthday. In 1968, after the Russian invasion of Czechoslovakia, Ina and her family left for Austria under the pretense of participating in a ski competition until they were able to immigrate to Canada.

Soon after, Ina’s husband left her and returned to Czechoslovakia. She started over in a foreign country with two young children, little money, and no knowledge of English or French. She secured a teaching position at an elite academy, impressing many with her abilities.

Over the years, Ina built a life in North America, remarried a Czech expat (with a young daughter, Monique), and operated a bed and breakfast in Vermont. She later moved to Colorado to be near her family. An avid skier and tennis player, she held an Aspen season ski pass until 2020.

Ina’s journey from war-torn Czechoslovakia to North America led her to The Hamptons of Tyler, where she cherishes time with her children and grandchildren.

After the passing of her husband in 2023, Ina relocated to The Hamptons of Tyler to be near her youngest daughter. Her children and grandchildren remain a central part of her life.

“Ina’s journey is one of perseverance,” said Rob Jones, Executive Director. “She has faced significant challenges, but she has always found a way forward. We are grateful to have her as part of our community.”
