On any given afternoon, Dollye A. plays piano – just as she’s done for the past 90 years – as her new neighbors listen and sometimes even dance to her performance.
The 93-year-old pianist just moved into Double Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care in Round Rock, Texas. If you’ve done the math, her love of music began when she was just 3 years old.
Though she has cognitive decline, her fingertips will never forget the playlist of music imprinted in her mind after decades of practice. “With her having dementia, she hasn’t lost the music,” her daughter, Gigi H. shares. “Before I even brought her here, I’d look at her, and she’d be moving her feet.”
“I asked her, ‘What are you doing?’” Gigi added. “And she goes, ‘I’m playing the piano!’”
Dollye has always been exceptionally bright. After graduating high school at 14, she would complete college shortly after at the age of 17. She and her late husband loved sharing their knowledge with others, and they would for many years as teachers.
As she settles into her new home, the happiness she spreads is already capturing attention! KVUE, the ABC affiliate in Austin, TX, recently shared Dollye’s beautiful story, which shows the impact she has on others.
“I just love to play,” Dollye says. “Music has been a part of my life for so long, and I’m thankful I can still share it with others.”
“It’s been great to see how Dollye’s music has brought our community closer,” said Diane Knutson, Executive Director of Double Creek Senior Living. “Her talent and love for playing have made a real difference, and we’re fortunate to have her with us. She continues to share something so personal and meaningful with everyone here.”
