This holiday is a day to recognize and thank the retiree in your life for all they have done. Thank them for their wisdom and remind them what a joy they are to have in your life.

There are a lot of seniors celebrating these days. Beginning in 2020, over 10,000 people turn 65 in the United States every day. The current over 65 population hovers around 73 million. These numbers are expected to double by 2050.

The History of Senior Citizens Day

Senior Citizens Day has been celebrated annually on August 21 since its inception in 1988. The day was established by presidential proclamation to show support for older Americans. It is also a day to increase awareness and highlight the issues that affect older adults.

The first national observance took place on August 19, 1988. On that day, then-President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5847, which created Senior Citizens Day.

Reagan said in the proclamation, “Our nation’s seniors have achieved much in their lives, and they continue to contribute to our society. They deserve our deepest respect and admiration, and we should do all we can to ensure that they lead productive, happy, healthy, and active lives.”

How to Celebrate Senior Citizens Day

Older adults are vulnerable to viruses. Use precautions when celebrating the seniors in your life. Here are some excellent socially-distant ways to celebrate Senior Citizens Day 2022:

  • Have a picnic in the park with your retiree friend or family member. Pack a lunch and enjoy the outdoors while catching up.
  • Send a card or letter expressing your gratitude for all they have done. A handwritten note is always appreciated.
  • Give them a call! Set aside some time to chat and catch up on what’s been going on in their life.
  • Donate to their favorite charity in their name.
  • Plan an at-home movie marathon of their favorite films from when they were younger. Pop some popcorn, make some snacks, and enjoy a trip down memory lane.

Get Your Discounts

In honor of National Senior Citizens day, many businesses are offering discounts! This is an excellent opportunity for older Americans to save money on their favorite products and services.

Some businesses offer seniors a percentage off their total purchase, while others give them a freebie with any purchase. No matter what the offer is, it’s worth checking out.

Some of the companies offering everyday discounts include:

  • Amazon
  • CVS
  • Joe’s Crab Shack
  • Audible
  • Ancestry
