HOW DO I AFFORD ALL THIS?

Assisted Living Communities in Texas: Residents Love It Here

In partnership with UT Austin, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) recently surveyed assisted living communities. The results are nothing short of astounding. Most assisted living residents in Texas are highly satisfied with their living arrangements.

Civitas Senior Living is proud to offer independent living, assisted living, and memory care that is recognized among the best by the Texas Assisted Living Association (TALA). Our Lone Star State-based communities are excited to be a part of this achievement in senior care.

This study is great news for seniors and their families considering assisted living communities in Texas. Let’s explore the survey results.

Assisted Living in the State of Texas: High Satisfaction Among Residents

The survey results show that:

  • 77.6 percent of residents rated their health as good, very good, or excellent
  • 37.9 percent reported their health improved since moving into their assisted living community
  • Less than a quarter (21.7 percent) have diabetes
  • The majority do not have dementia (72.7 percent) or other cognitive impairments (77.2 percent)
  • Most residents do not experience depression (72.7 percent) or anxiety (71.6 percent)

Senior health is a top priority in Texas assisted living communities. The HHSC ensures that all care facilities adhere to strict guidelines to protect residents’ well-being. Regular health checks, safe medication management, and a secure living environment contribute to residents feeling cared for.

One benefit of senior living communities is the reduction of fall risk. Here’s how Texans are responding:

  • Most residents (93.8 percent) are assessed for fall risk upon admission
  • Gait ability is the most common reason for falls (83 percent)
  • Nearly all staff (99.2 percent) receive training on preventing resident falls
  • Most residents (89.7 percent) did not fall within a 30-day timeframe

Many of our communities, in partnership with Select Rehabilitation, offer on-site physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

Select Rehabilitation stands out by utilizing VSTBalance, an AI tool that quickly identifies fall risks and long-term solutions for older adults. The tool analyzes balance and mobility factors to provide customized assessments and generate personalized reports with recommendations for exercise, therapy, and home modifications to reduce fall risks.

Quality Personal Care Services

One key factor contributing to resident satisfaction is the excellent personal care services offered. These services include help with activities of daily living, such as:

  • Bathing
  • Dressing
  • Medication management

The attention to detail and personalized care plans make a significant difference in the lives of residents.

UT Austin reviewers found that the majority of communities demonstrated robust policies covering health care, emergency services, and complaint processes. Importantly, no communities showed any lack of concern for residents’ mental, physical, or psychosocial well-being.

Among the 517 communities reviewed:

  • Quality of care: 87.3 percent satisfied
  • Quality of life: 90.7 percent satisfied

Activities and Community Engagement

Another factor contributing to high satisfaction is the variety of activities available to residents. Assisted living communities in Texas provide numerous opportunities for social engagement, physical activity, and mental stimulation. These activities, from group exercise classes to hobby clubs and outings, help residents stay active and engaged.

Residents expressed high levels of satisfaction with:

  • Food and mealtimes: 72.5 percent like the food, 87.8 percent enjoy mealtimes, and 70.2 percent have access to snacks
  • Organized activities: 81.9 percent enjoy these activities
  • Outdoor access: 92.1 percent can go outdoors when they wish
  • Feeling secure: 95.4 percent

At Civitas Senior Living, we strive to enhance resident satisfaction through unique programs and offerings. Our Passion Program focuses on personalized care and creating moments of joy for each resident. This includes Miracle Moments, where we celebrate residents’ personal dreams and milestones.

We also take pride in our dining options, featuring a new summer menu crafted by our talented chefs who create seasonal dishes to tantalize taste buds. To add to the delight, we’ve partnered with Blue Bell Creameries, a beloved Texas company, to offer this local favorite as a sweet treat.

Many of our locations also feature our specialized memory care community, The Cottage. This signature benefit allows residents to age in place, providing a supportive environment for those developing Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

The Cost of Assisted Living in Texas

Understanding the cost of assisted living is crucial for families planning for the future. Another reason Texas assisted living residents are so satisfied is that the cost of assisted living in Texas is lower than the national average.

According to 2023 Genworth statistics, the average monthly cost for an assisted living facility in the United States is $5,350, whereas in Texas, it is $4,915. These substantial savings make Texas an attractive option for many families looking to pay for assisted living without compromising quality of care and amenities.

Texas offers a variety of senior living communities, including independent living, assisted living, and memory care. This range of options ensures a perfect fit for every individual, whether they need minimal assistance or comprehensive long-term care. Choosing the right type of senior living is crucial for maintaining a high quality of life.

Civitas Senior Living communities want to provide families excellent value, offering a high level of care and a wide range of amenities at competitive rates.
